The Single effect evaporator
Relationship to the Mass Balance Block
The yellow circle indicates where the Mass Balance block is located in the single effect. The feed enters the plates at the bottom and rises to the to picking up heat from the steam plates which are sandwiched in between. So you can see the steam input is controlled by a modulating valve as is the feed flow with its modulating valve. The finished product exits at the bottom of the separator vessel and the boiled off water exits the top in the form of vapor.
Adding the condenser
Here e have added a shell and tube condenser which uses cool water on the shell side. The vapor from the separator vessel enters the tubes and is cooled and condenses. This condensate is then pumped away.
This also has a vacuum pump to control the boiling point of the product and also to remove the non condensable gases that are released from the liquid when boiled.
